DOJ Mines Asarco For Over $1B In Claims

Law360, New York (August 3, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Justice Department has filed about $1.3 billion in claims against bankrupt mining company Asarco LLC for environmental damages at 31 sites in 14 states, all but one of them west of the Mississippi River.

Asarco, which declared Chapter 11 protection last August after its parent company, Grupo Mexico SA, sold off its most lucrative assets, may eventually be subject to even more federal claims, the DOJ said in filings to a claims administrator in Connecticut.
