Judge Greenlights Schwarzenegger's Furloughs Plan

Law360, New York (January 29, 2009, 12:00 AM EST) -- A California state judge has given Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger the go-ahead to implement a controversial policy that would require government workers to take two unpaid days of leave a month to help the state's dire financial situation.

On Thursday, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Patrick Marlette found that Schwarzenegger had the authority to enact the measure, which had come under fire from two public unions, the International Herald Tribune reported.

"The current circumstances constitute an emergency," Marlette said. "The challenged order is reasonable and necessary."
