Eastman Reaches Deal In W.Va. Chemical Spill Fight

Law360, New York (October 26, 2016, 6:51 PM EDT) -- Eastman Chemical Co. said Wednesday it has reached a deal to resolve class allegations over the company's role in a Freedom Industries Inc. coal-processing chemical mixture spill in West Virginia that left nearly 300,000 people without drinking water for days in early 2014.

According to notes from a status conference held by U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr., counsel for Eastman "announced that a settlement had been reached" with residents across the state who lodged claims against it over the incident. The company will soon file the terms of the deal, but they will be filed under seal.
