Autonomous Cars Need Strong Privacy Rules, Says Nonprofit

Law360, New York (November 23, 2016, 6:09 PM EST) -- The Electronic Privacy Information Center has pushed for stronger standards when it comes to protecting driver data collected from self-driving vehicles in a letter aimed at the highway safety regulator's inclusion of cybersecurity considerations in recent guidance on the topic.

EPIC, a Washington, D.C.-based public interest research center, said the industry standard for regulating data generated by autonomous cars, like the information collected from a vehicle's cameras and sensors, fails to adequately protect driver privacy, calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Wednesday to issue mandatory rules addressing privacy risks.
