$54B Anthem-Cigna Merger Spiked By Judge

Law360, New York (February 8, 2017, 7:15 PM EST) -- A District of Columbia federal judge on Wednesday forbade health insurance giants Anthem and Cigna from proceeding with a proposed $54 billion combination, agreeing with the government that the industry's largest-ever merger would create an unlawful concentration of market power.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said she would enjoin the merger because of its likely impact on sales to large "national accounts" in 14 states where Anthem operates as a licensee of Blue Cross Blue Shield.
