NJ Hospital Slapped With Bias Suit By Transgender Man

Law360, New York (January 5, 2017, 4:17 PM EST) -- A Catholic hospital in New Jersey has been slapped with a discrimination lawsuit in federal court by a transgender man who claims he was refused a hysterectomy that was deemed medically necessary to treat his gender dysphoria. 

In a complaint filed Thursday, Jionni Conforti of Totowa alleges that a surgeon at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson had initially agreed to perform the surgery, which was recommended by his primary care physician and therapist, but then the hospital’s administration halted the plan because it was for gender reassignment purposes.
