Federal Gov't Pays $290K To End Suit Over Newborn's Injury

By Suevon Lee (January 30, 2017, 6:58 PM EST) -- A Florida federal judge on Monday entered a judgment formally closing a medical malpractice case in which the U.S. government agreed to pay a woman $290,000 to resolve claims a certified midwife at a federally sponsored health facility caused a newborn's shoulder injury.

The judgment from U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell follows her approval of the settlement earlier in the month, finding it "in the best interest of the minor," after the parties notified the court they reached a settlement in mid-December.
