First Trial Over Prempro Begins For Wyeth

Law360, New York (August 21, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The first trial in the approximately 5,000 lawsuits facing Wyeth over its menopause drug Prempro began Monday in federal court in Arkansas.

The case may largely influence whether Wyeth begins to settle each case, like it did in the fen-phen litigation, or try each case individually as did Merck in the Vioxx litigation.

In the first Prempro case, plaintiff Linda Reeves is suing Wyeth, alleging that taking Prempro for eight years gave her breast cancer. She developed cancer in 2000, and has since had a mastectomy....
