Nanoscience involves structures and substances so small that they are essentially invisible and challenge our ability to conceptualize their size.

One nanometer is 1 billionth of a meter. A human hair measures 80,000 nanometers wide, and the smallest things visible to the human eye are 10,000 nanometers wide.
