Judge Swain Chosen To Preside Over Puerto Rico Bankruptcy

Law360, Los Angeles (May 5, 2017, 8:56 PM EDT) -- U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts on Friday appointed U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain to preside over Puerto Rico's $70 billion bankruptcy case, anticipated to be the largest municipal debt restructuring in U.S. history.

The selection comes two days after Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló said the government had officially notified the state’s Fiscal Supervision Board that it wanted to restructure its debts under Title III of the 2016 Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act, after several major creditors filed suit over bond payments.
