E.U. Expands Probe Of Italy's Autostrade Intervention

Law360, New York (August 31, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Expanding its inquiry into possible violations of open-market laws by the Italian government, the European Commission has asked Italy for details about its veto of the proposed merger of Italy's top highways operator and a Spanish rival.

The E.C.’s Internal Markets and Services Directorate General sent the request for information to Italy’s mission in Brussels. The step is the latest fallout from an Italian law that blocked the €25 billion merger of Italian highways operator Autostrade SpA and Spain's Abertis Infraestructuras SA.
