Consumers Say Merck's Shingles Vaccine Poses Health Risks
By Bill Wichert (July 18, 2017, 7:29 PM EDT) -- Eighteen consumers from nearly a dozen states have launched a product liability action against Merck & Co Inc. in New Jersey state court alleging they suffered medical problems after receiving the company's Zostavax shingles vaccine, saying the pharmaceutical giant failed to warn them about the risks associated with the medicine.
While Zostavax is intended to prevent shingles, the plaintiffs assert that the vaccine caused each of them to contract a persistent strain of the disease, leading in some cases to postherpetic neuralgia, a chronic condition of nerve damage and pain. One consumer said her symptoms were accompanied by scarring.
