High Court Affirms $79.5M Award In Philip Morris Case

Law360 (March 31, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld without comment the Oregon Supreme Court's mandate that Altria Group Inc.'s Philip Morris USA division pay $79.5 million in punitive damages to the estate of a former smoker.

In a one-page order, the high court affirmed the state court's ruling, ending one chapter of a decade-old dispute that has volleyed between the two Supreme Courts for years.
