California Governor Will Nix Health Care Bill

Law360, New York (September 6, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a turnaround from last month’s collaboration with Democratic leaders, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday that he plans to block legislation aimed at creating a universal health care system to finance the medical expenses of all Californians, claming it would be too expensive.

The bill, SB 840—which has yet to reach the Governor’s desk—would establish a single-payer system called the California Health Insurance Agency that would replace the existing network of private companies and set rates for private doctors and hospitals.
