Life Insurance Not A Good Or Service: Calif. High Court

Law360 (April 21, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The California Supreme Court has upheld a lower court's dismissal of a putative class action accusing a life insurance company of deceptive and unfair trade practices, ruling that life insurance does not qualify as a good or service under the relevant consumer statute.

The Supreme Court of California rejected the appeal of lead plaintiff Pauline Fairbanks after finding that Farmers New World Life Insurance Co. could not be held liable under the state's Consumers Legal Remedies Act.
