FCC ‘Strayed Too Far’ From Merger Role, New Commish Says

Law360, Washington (November 17, 2017, 8:08 PM EST) -- The Federal Communications Commission “strayed too far” from its proper role in merger reviews in recent years, the newest Republican member of the agency said Friday, criticizing the last administration for making consumer “goodies” a condition of various telecom deals.

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr told an audience of conservative lawyers in Washington, D.C., that the commission’s Republican majority is “going to be much more disciplined” during merger reviews, focusing on specific harms rather than unrelated consumer perks.
