Suit Says Nielsen Abused TV Ratings Monopoly

Law360, New York (May 1, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A Florida television station operator has filed an antitrust suit against Nielsen Media Research Inc. alleging the company has abused its monopoly in the television ratings industry and forced stations to use defective viewership data.

Sunbeam Television Corp., operator of Fox affiliate WSVN-TV in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market, filed the suit Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida claiming Nielsen has employed a number of tactics to discourage potential competitors from entering the television ratings market.
