A California federal judge on Wednesday ordered St. Paul Mercury Insurance Co. to defend Tessera Inc. in a lawsuit alleging it breached a patent licensing agreement, determining that a policy exclusion for violations of intellectual property rights doesn't apply because the underlying action doesn't implicate patent laws.
