A California federal judge on Monday dismissed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s suit against Countrywide Financial Corp. and other major lenders over residential mortgage-backed securities, saying the claims are time-barred.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. asked a California federal court on Tuesday to reconsider the August dismissal of its fraud case alleging that Countrywide Financial Corp. and several other major lenders sold $1.5 billion in mortgage-backed securities in 2006 while lying about the value of their underlying assets.

A California federal judge on Friday denied the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s request to send a $1.5 billion lawsuit against major lenders back to Texas state court, ruling that federal, not state, claims predominate in the case over whether big banks deceived Guaranty Bank into buying toxic mortgage-backed securities.
