U.S. Steel Corp. agreed on Monday to improve its safety plans, pay about $600,000 in penalties and reimburse the government for cleanup costs caused by a 2017 wastewater spill at its steel manufacturing plant in Portage, Indiana, that released chromium into nearby waters.
