EU Approves €60M In Aid For Austrian Broadband Build-Out

Law360 (August 20, 2019, 4:11 PM EDT) -- The European Commission approved €60 million ($66.6 million) in state aid to go toward building high-speed internet in a mountainous, rural swath of Austria, it announced Tuesday.

After mulling the idea, the commission said it thinks that handing over the money to help the Carinthia region build up the infrastructure it needs to deploy “ultrafast” internet will do more good than harm.

“The positive effects of the measure on competition in the Austrian broadband market outweigh any potential negative effects brought about by the state aid,” the commission said in a statement.
