EU Must Pay Up For Lengthy Cartel Appeal In Landmark Case

Law360, New York (January 10, 2017, 3:16 PM EST) -- A European Union court for the first time Tuesday awarded two companies damages against the bloc for the excessive delay in the industrial bag makers' appeal of cartel fines, granting them about €50,000 ($52,797) as four similar challenges await on the court's docket.

The EU's General Court granted Gascogne Sack Deutschland GmbH and Gascogne SA each €5,000 in damages for nonmaterial harm plus another €47,000 in damages for material harm for the nearly six years it originally took the court to resolve their appeals. The EU's...
