Senate Commerce Chief Decries Mini-Med Exemption

Law360, New York (November 23, 2010, 1:17 PM EST) -- Senate Commerce Committee chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., is promising to bring intense scrutiny to insurers' attempts to claim waivers from new medical-loss ratio rules for limited benefit mini-med plans, which are popular with large employers such as McDonald's Corp.

In a statement Monday, Rockefeller said he was generally pleased with the new medical-loss regulation released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services but that he had concerns with a provision that excuses mini-med plans from having to comply with all MLR restrictions until 2014....
