Houston Judge Sides With City On Equal Rights Law Petitions

Law360, Houston (April 17, 2015, 7:07 PM EDT) -- A Texas judge on Friday said the city of Houston was right to reject certain petitions in opposition to its equal rights ordinance as invalid, leaving opponents of the measure more than 500 signatures short of the 17,269 required to force a repeal referendum.

Harris County District Court Judge Robert Schaffer on Friday ruled that the final tally of signatures was just 16,684, more than the county's original tally of about 15,000 votes but still below the threshold, calculated as 10 percent of the votes in the last Houston mayoral election.
