FERC Blocks Ohio Coal Plant Subsidy Deals

Law360, New York (April 27, 2016, 6:18 PM EDT) -- The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission blocked a controversial pair of power subsidy agreements Wednesday between FirstEnergy Corp., American Electric Power Co. Inc. and their Ohio affiliates, yanking FERC-granted waivers that had freed the utilities from restrictions on power sales among affiliated companies.

The commission granted the complaints filed by a coalition of power companies and industry groups, which had said the long-term power purchase agreements inked by AEP and FirstEnergy and their Ohio utility units were anti-competitive and saddled ratepayers with keeping uneconomic coal plants open....
