USCIS Wants Sponsors To Repay Gov't For Benefits

Law360 (September 10, 2020, 10:14 PM EDT) -- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on Thursday announced an initiative to hold immigrant sponsors legally responsible for reimbursing the government for benefits used by their immigrant sponsees.

The new initiative in the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements – or SAVE – program will "enable agencies that administer federal means-tested benefits to ensure more effective compliance with federal laws, regulations and policies related to financial support of aliens by their sponsors and agency reimbursement," the USCIS said in a statement.

Sponsors are individuals who agree to use their income and resources to support "sponsored aliens," USCIS said.
