STMicro, Caltech Settle Dispute Over Image Sensor Patents

Law360, New York (November 6, 2012, 10:49 PM EST) -- STMicroelectronics Inc. has settled claims brought by the California Institute of Technology alleging STMicro, Nokia Corp. and Research In Motion Ltd. infringed image sensing technology patents, according to a U.S. International Trade Commission judge Monday.

Administrative Law Judge Theodore Essex — who issued an order Monday putting the proceedings on hold pending the end of an ITC investigation — said the settlement would resolve claims that STMicro made smartphone camera components that allegedly infringed Caltech's patented technology and sold the parts to Nokia and RIM, which were also targeted in the university's complaint.
