Fed. Circ. Affirms Ax Of Darts-Refereeing Patent Under Alice

By Matthew Bultman (November 13, 2018, 7:46 PM EST) -- The Federal Circuit on Tuesday ruled a patent covering a refereeing system for darts games was invalid under the U.S. Supreme Court's Alice test, solidifying Arachnid 360 LLC's victory in a patent suit brought by a rival electronic dartboard maker.

The appeals court summarily affirmed an Illinois federal judge's 2017 decision to dismiss the infringement lawsuit from Spain's Gaelco SA. The judge held the patent was invalid under the test in Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank barring patents on abstract ideas implemented on a computer.

Attorneys for Gaelco and Arachnid could not immediately be reached for comment.
