Prior Deal Gives Telecom Win In Prison Phone Patent Suit

Law360, New York (January 26, 2017, 8:54 PM EST) -- The Federal Circuit upheld a district court win for Global Tel Link in a patent lawsuit that rival Securus Technologies Inc. brought in 2013 over prison phone systems, finding an earlier settlement agreement with a Global Tel Link subsidiary barred the infringement claims.

The appeals court also affirmed U.S. District Judge Ed Kinkeade's ruling that Global Tel Link was unable to collect attorneys' fees it incurred defending the suit because it failed to timely designate an expert to testify about the reasonableness of the fees, as required by Texas law.
