New Calif. Law Cited In Push For Noncitizens In Fla. Bar

Law360, Miami (November 1, 2013, 9:05 PM EDT) -- Attorneys for an undocumented immigrant who sought admission to the Florida Bar pointed to recently passed legislation in California they say provides a path to resolving his case affirmatively, in materials filed Thursday with the Florida Supreme Court.

The new California law allows otherwise-qualified undocumented immigrants to be admitted to the practice of law there. The notice filed by Jose Manuel Godinez-Samperio's attorneys says this demonstrates a state's ability to opt out of federal law prohibiting the issuance of a law or other professional license to an undocumented immigrant....
