By Ruth Rauls (March 19, 2018, 11:30 AM EDT) -- New Jersey is on the precipice of major changes to how it treats cannabis. One relates to the much-anticipated dramatic expansion of New Jersey's medicinal marijuana program and another to proposed legislation to legalize adult use of marijuana in the Garden State. Both of these changes are made possible by the election of Phil Murphy as New Jersey's new governor, replacing Chris Christie, a staunch opponent to any increased access to marijuana, medicinal or otherwise. Additionally, a recent Appellate Division decision issued a finding that New Jersey's director of the Division of Consumer Affairs had the authority to reschedule marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule IV drug under the New Jersey Controlled Dangerous Substances Act[1] and additional legislation has been introduced which would expunge cannabis possession convictions, as well as address other cannabis-related issues. While the final act has yet to be written, the stars may be aligning in New Jersey for significant changes to how it deals with cannabis. For employers, this means significantly more employees using marijuana, medical or recreational, in the near future....
