Newark Demands Contamination Cleanup At Ex-DuPont Site

By Kat Greene (March 10, 2015, 8:39 PM EDT) -- Newark, New Jersey, slammed DuPont Co. and a handful of other onetime occupants of a pigment plant in the city with a lawsuit demanding they clean up the mess of arsenic, chromium, lead and other carcinogens they allegedly left behind in the soil and water.

Lead concentrations in the soil under the former pigment factory at 256 Vanderpool St. are 1,000 times higher than the state's environmental laws allow, meaning the soil is nearly 40 percent lead by weight, the city alleged in its suit.
