RJR, Philip Morris Hit With $41M Engle Verdict By Fla. Jury

By Carolina Bolado (October 22, 2014, 8:20 PM EDT) -- A Florida federal jury on Wednesday hit Philip Morris USA Inc. and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with a $41.1 million verdict for a smoker suffering from severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

A jury in the Middle District of Florida awarded Kenneth Kerrivan, of Lake Panasoffkee, Florida, $15.8 million in compensatory damages as well as punitive damages of $15.7 million against Philip Morris and $9.6 million against R.J. Reynolds for allegedly conspiring to conceal the dangers of smoking and the addictive nature of cigarettes.
