Thales Extends $5B Data Encryption Offer Amid Probes

By Matthew Perlman (August 13, 2018, 7:09 PM EDT) -- The Thales Group said Friday that it has extended the acceptance period for its planned $5 billion purchase of Gemalto NV, as competition authorities in several jurisdictions give the tie-up a close look over concerns about hardware components used for data encryption.

Thales had already extended the offer for Gemalto's outstanding shares in June over concerns the companies would not be able to win the needed clearances before the offer closed and said that an extension beyond the new Aug. 15 cutoff would be necessary.
