FCC Should Update Regs For Rural Business Data Services

By Jenna Ebersole (May 30, 2017, 7:31 PM EDT) -- Trade groups representing rural telecom companies have asked the Federal Communications Commission to modernize its rates, terms and conditions for certain small and rural providers offering business data services, saying older rules are hurting their ability to compete.

ITTA and USTelecom said in a joint petition at the FCC filed Thursday that the agency should undertake a rulemaking process to streamline the regulations. The FCC's Republicans voted in April to recognize competition in the broader business data services market and deregulate it, relaxing pricing regulations despite calls from some corners for a delay or course change.
