AGs Break New Ground With Emoluments Suit Against Trump

By Martha Coakley and Aaron Lang (June 16, 2017, 12:54 PM EDT) -- The attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia, Brian Frosh and Karl Racine, have sued President Donald Trump, alleging that his refusal to divest from his business empire has caused him to repeatedly violate the Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses of the U.S. Constitution. This isn't the first lawsuit of its kind: A watchdog organization, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, brought a similar suit in January. And over 190 Democratic members of Congress just filed their own emoluments lawsuit days after D.C. and Maryland filed theirs. However, it is the first initiated by state attorneys general, and it shows the determination of certain states (and D.C.) to continue battling the Trump administration in court....
