Texas Court Trims Cop's Defamation Suit Against Union

Law360, Dallas (January 31, 2014, 9:19 PM EST) -- A Texas appeals court on Friday dismissed most of a defamation suit by a former employee against police union Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas under a state free speech law, rejecting a constitutional challenge to the law.

Partially reversing a trial judge's order, the Third Court of Appeals dismissed several claims brought against the union by Mike Sheffield, a former CLEAT field service representative and Austin police officer who claimed CLEAT officials falsely accused him of committing criminal acts.

Several of Sheffield's claims survived and will return to the trial court for further proceedings, but for three of his defamation...
