Ala.'s Shelby To Take Over Senate Appropriations Committee

By Daniel Wilson (April 11, 2018, 7:27 PM EDT) -- Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., will take over the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, giving him chief authority over Senate spending legislation, after being approved for the chairman's role on Tuesday.

Shelby will take over from former Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., after a resolution reflecting his new assignment — following an earlier vote among his committee colleagues — was unanimously approved by the Senate on Tuesday evening. Cochran had retired at the start of April after 45 years in Congress, citing ill health.
