Does Greyhound Have To Comply With Border Agents?

By David Jones (August 10, 2018, 12:53 PM EDT) -- For at least a few years, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (collectively hereinafter U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents) have been boarding Greyhound buses across the country, with specific reports in Arizona, California, Michigan, Vermont and Washington, and requesting the immigration documents of the passengers. Section 264(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act requires "[e]very alien eighteen years of age and over" to "at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card ..." As such, if an ICE officer encounters an individual and requests that person's immigration documents, all non-U.S. citizens/nationals are required to provide them. If the individual is not authorized to be in the United States or the person's status cannot be determined, DHS agents may detain that person....
