3M Sues Rival Over RFID Patents

Law360, New York (June 23, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- 3M Co. has filed a lawsuit against much smaller rival Envisionware Inc., claiming the library technology company infringed 3M patents related to radio frequency identification tags and self-service technology.

Envisionware allegedly infringed three 3M patents that cover technologies used to reduce the workload of librarians, 3M said in a complaint filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. The patents describe inventions that incorporate RFID technology into already commonplace library innovations, such as security tags on books and self-service kiosks.
