Sen. Blasts College Bowl System As Anti-Competitive

Law360, New York (June 30, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Because college football teams from some large conferences are given preference, the structure of the Bowl Championship Series places more than half of U.S. teams at a competitive disadvantage, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Tuesday at a hearing on whether the system runs afoul of antitrust laws.

“The system expressly limits the number of outside teams that are able to qualify” for top games, said Hatch, ranking member of the U.S. Senate Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights.
