Arista Prevails In Copyright Case Against Usenet.com

Law360, New York (July 1, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A group of 14 record companies — including Arista Records LLC, BMG Music and Virgin Records America Inc. — has won a judgment against commercial Usenet provider Usenet.com Inc., which allegedly tailored its service to fill a void left by now-shuttered illegal file sharing networks.

Usenet.com directly infringed the record company's copyrighted works, and committed inducement to infringe, contributory infringement and vicarious infringement, Judge Harold Baer of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York said in a decision issued Tuesday.
