Multiemployer Plan Rescue Plot 'Distributes Pain Equitably'

By Emily Brill (November 21, 2018, 6:09 PM EST) -- As lawmakers stare down a Nov. 30 deadline for producing a strategy to save the multiemployer pension system, they're considering a proposal that attempts to spread the pain of saving the beleaguered system among many stakeholders — employers, workers, plans and the government — while minimizing damage to retirees, experts said.

The proposal would require plans to save more money and the Treasury Department to chip in $3 billion per year to help plans whose employers didn't pay in as much as workers want to take out, according to a draft of the strategy obtained by Law360 on Wednesday.
