Law360 (January 25, 2019, 8:49 PM EST) -- Consumer groups have urged the Federal Trade Commission to fine Facebook more than $2 billion for allegedly violating an agreement not to share user data in a way that goes beyond privacy settings, a penalty that would dwarf a record $22.5 million fine the agency hit Google with in 2012.
Nearly a dozen advocacy groups, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center, Color of Change and the Government Accountability Project, sent a letter to FTC Chairman Joe Simons on Thursday, slamming Facebook for allegedly repeatedly breaching a 2011 consent decree requiring Facebook to be transparent about its privacy practices.
