Ex-Hospital Director Says Nursing Home Owner Offered Bribes

Law360, Miami (February 13, 2019, 10:43 PM EST) -- A former hospital director who was indicted along with Miami businessman Philip Esformes over an alleged $1 billion health care fraud scheme took the stand Wednesday for the prosecution, telling jurors how she and others set up contracts with doctors to pay them bribes for referring patients to Esformes' assisted living and nursing home facilities.

Odette Barcha, who was director of outreach programs at Larkin Community Hospital and pled guilty last month, explained how she would introduce Esformes to doctors and help set up illegitimate contracts to pay doctors for sending patients to facilities in the Esformes network.
