Kanye Says EMI Has Him 'Tethered' To Exploitative Contracts

Law360 (March 4, 2019, 7:04 PM EST) -- Hip-hop icon Kanye West accused his longtime publisher EMI of locking him into a "lopsided" business arrangement that's barred by California labor code, which limits how long certain contractual relationships can last, according to a suit removed on Friday to Golden State federal court.

West and a handful of his corporate entities sued EMI April Music Inc. and EMI Blackwood Music Inc. on Jan. 25 in Los Angeles county court, claiming the music publishing companies had violated Section 2855 of California's labor code, which limits the length of personal services contracts to a maximum of seven years.
