Merck To Pay $80M To Settle Vioxx Suits

Law360, New York (August 3, 2009, 8:24 PM EDT) -- Merck & Co. Inc. has agreed to pay $80 million to settle 190 outstanding claims by unions and health insurance plans that sued over the withdrawn pain drug Vioxx.

Merck described the settlement, which had not been previously disclosed, in a filing Monday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

A representative of Merck said the company would have no further comment beyond the SEC filing.

According to the filing, the 190 claims by individual third-party payors are pending in the Superior Court of New Jersey...
