Ohio AG Asks 6th Circ. To Halt Upcoming Opioid Bellwether

Law360 (August 30, 2019, 8:41 PM EDT) -- Ohio's attorney general on Friday urged the Sixth Circuit to halt an upcoming bellwether trial that's part of multidistrict litigation against drugmakers blamed for the opioid crisis, calling the claims made by two Buckeye State counties in the bellwether case an "intrusion onto sovereign territory."

Attorney General Dave Yost asked the appeals court to either throw out the counties' case or pause the bellwether trial, claiming the counties' complaints usurped the state's "parens patriae" authority, which allows the government to take action as a guardian of public welfare.
