Warren Plan Would Put Tribes In Driver’s Seat On Policy

Elizabeth Warren’s ambitious legislative platform for Native Americans offers tribal leaders the chance to exert a more powerful influence inside the federal government and to shape federal policy to let tribal governments implement programs their way, experts say.

Warren’s proposal, which she highlighted at a recent Iowa event for Democratic presidential candidates, combines two key ideas: creating federal government positions that will better serve tribes, and guaranteeing funding for a wide range of programs, from health care and public safety to education and housing, to tribes’ benefit.
