EU High Court Backs Portugal's Gambling Restrictions

Law360, New York (September 8, 2009, 2:14 PM EDT) -- The European Union's highest court has denied gambling operator Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG's attempt to solicit online bets in Portugal, validating the country's restrictions on foreign participation and providing a feather in the cap for state-run gambling monopolies.

The European Court of Justice on Tuesday declared that restrictions against foreign gambling operations imposed by Departamento de Jogos da Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa, a state-run gaming operation in Portugal, stand as valid because they target online fraud and crime.
